We talk alot about what to do, and how to pose, but let’s not forget about what NOT to do! Here are some basic things you should try to avoid when posing your subject.
A squared straight on headshot can easily look like a mugshot.
Avoid letting the model/client slouch.
Avoid a perfectly straight, flat body, front shot.
Avoid alien arm/hand, hands wrapped around body parts or objects popping out of no where is frightening.
Avoid extreme head tilts, the broken neck look just doesn’t work.
Don’t be afraid of directing your client/model.
Avoid the pregnant slouch, a lot of women do it, belly out, shoulders slouched.
Avoid genre mixing. Posing for the right genre is an important part of telling the story. So posing Mom in a Couture twist just doesn’t work.
Avoid being too serious and judgmental, remember if need be, show your client/model the pose you are looking for!
